WeRobot is proud to share exciting news about one of our teams, 2014H Hyper Hawks, as they reached an important milestone in their robotics journey.

On January 10, Hyper Hawks attended their first-ever VEX IQ competition, the Bay Area VIQRC Mix and Match Tournament #5. This student-led team is made up of four 5th graders and one 6th grader from Sandpiper Elementary School, who have been working hard to learn robotics, teamwork, and problem-solving coached by WeRobot’s student mentors.

Despite it being their debut tournament, Hyper Hawks delivered an outstanding performance. The team advanced all the way to the finals, demonstrating strong collaboration, strategic thinking, and technical skills. In the final match, they achieved an impressive score of 140, a remarkable accomplishment for a first competition.

This achievement reflects the students’ dedication and passion for robotics, which is always supported by WeRobot. We congratulate 2014H Hyper Hawks on an excellent first tournament and look forward to seeing them continue to grow and excel in future competitions.

Today, WeRobot teams attended the first Sandpiper Robotics scrimmage. We are excited seeing the diversity of robots and teams, everyone just super excited to get out there on the fields and do their best. â€‹

WeRobot Team SE, mentored by Vincent and Aiken, paired with WeRobot alumni team (45566X), earned the highest score (133) and $50 Amazon gift card. Congratulations! It’s worth noting that team 45566X began their robotics journey with WeRobot mentors three years ago. They have since graduated from WeRobot and grown into an elite team, now designing and building their robots independently.

WeRobot Team F2 mentored by Ryan, Kenneth, Mathew, and Team M2 mentored by Karina and Tim, worked hard throughout the matches and achieved their best scores. All of the team members enjoyed working with their mentors and learned a lot from them.

WeRobot Team F1, with students as young as 3rd grade, faced the toughest challenge of the day: “The robot is broken.” With their mentor absent, WeRobot Kevin stepped in, taking the team aside to troubleshoot and get the robot moving again. The kids learned how to face setbacks and push through without giving up. They will continue improving their robot before the tournament.

In addition to supporting the WeRobot teams, Kevin also served as an EMCEE and Referee alongside our retired mentor, Rien. They worked tirelessly to keep the matches running smoothly and successfully.

We are proud of every student and mentor for their dedication and teamwork. Let’s keep the momentum going as we prepare for the upcoming tournament!

Mentor Giancarlo is always our best mentor. He is patient and knowledgeable, working with kids as young as 3rd grade who have no prior experience in robotics or engineering. Since 9th grade, he has guided rookie teams through their first steps in their robotics journey. The kids see him as a role model, and parents appreciate his dedication and patience as well. Thank you, Giancarlo!

November 06 2025, Go, Team F2!

Team F2 has been making amazing progress these past few weeks! They’ve already got a robot that’s working, and they’ve even tweaked it a bit, like lowering the gear ratio for the elevator to give it more torque.  Plus, they’ve been diving into the basics of VexCode and have wrapped up programming the drive code. Keep up the fantastic work, Team F2! Pictures show Team F2 and Mentor Ryan testing their robot.

October 25 2025,  Lightning Bots Win Excellence Award at Dublin Tournament

We are thrilled to celebrate the success of Lightning Bots, a team from Sandpiper School, who won the Excellence Award in the elementary school teams at the Dublin Robotics Club VEX IQ Tournament 1 on Oct 25th, 2025. The Lightning Bots consist of three 5th-grade students who showcased exceptional skills in robot design, programming, and teamwork throughout the competition.

Their coach, Vincent, a dedicated WeRobot mentor, has been guiding and supporting the team on their robotics journey. This award recognizes not only the students’ hard work and creativity but also the mentorship and community spirit that WeRobot strives to foster. Congratulations to the Lightning Bots and coach Vincent on this outstanding achievement!

October 01 2025, Congressional Award For Community Service

To help WeRobot mentors record their volunteer hours and receive recognition for their service, WeRobot has decided to support mentors in applying for the Congressional Award beginning in the 2025–2026 season.

The Congressional Award is the United States Congress’s official award for young Americans. It is a well-established and prestigious program that aligns perfectly with the goals of WeRobot volunteers.

Today, WeRobot held an information session for all mentors to explain how to apply for the award and accurately record their volunteer work. WeRobot mentor Ryan and his mom conducted pioneering research on the program and led the session, guiding all mentors through the registration process and helping them get started.

September 30 2025, Progress, Progress...

As the WeRobot teams have been maintaining the momentum of their first meeting, they've made some serious progress! Many teams are done building the hero-bot, Huey, and WeRobot mentor Parker is shown here discussing next steps with the Botzilla Robotics team. After the hero-bot is done, the WeRobot teams plan to program basic maneuverability, practice driving the robot and plan improvements to the base design. Though there have been slight hiccups to the meeting schedules, like the unfortunate closing of room 6 at Sandpiper, the WeRobot teams have adapted quickly and held impromptu meetings in team parents' garages. Let's continue to cheer for the WeRobot teams as they get ready for the Sandpiper tournament!

Sep 10, 2025, Finally Meet the Parents

IMG_6057.jpg

After many back-forth rounds coordinating with parents and mentors, we finally matched mentors to the teams. Today, WeRobot mentors met the parents of the students who will begin their first robotics journey. The parents were excited to meet their mentors. After the presentation, they introduced themselves to each other and began planning the first meeting between the mentors and students. It’s a promising start. Let’s go, WeRobot teams!

IMG_6038.jpg

Kevin from WeRobot reviewed the WeRobot curriculum for mentors, highlighting how it can be presented to students. He emphasized the importance of design notes, encouraging mentors to guide students in documenting every step of the engineering process, including brainstorming, designing, building, testing, modifying, and practicing. We also distributed this year’s WeRobot T-shirts in vibrant red!

With training complete, our WeRobot mentors are now well-prepared and excited to meet the parents and students soon.

Sep 02, 2025, Kevin Presented WeRobot To Sandpiper Parents

Sandpiper parents have started signing up their kids for Sandpiper Robotics teams. To give them a clear understanding of what WeRobot is and how it can support their teams, Kevin gave a presentation introducing WeRobot at the Sandpiper Robotics Kick-off Meeting. The parents showed great interest in WeRobot, and many of them signed up for WeRobot Mentors to guide their teams.

August 27 2025, WeRobot Mentoring Team Are Preparing for 2025-2026!

As some of our senior mentors have moved on to college, we began recruiting new members in May. So far, we’ve brought on 10 mentors, including two enthusiastic 8th graders who have won multiple awards in previous VEX IQ championships. With this growth, WeRobot is now able to coach 5 teams this year. Mentors have been paired up to form mentor teams, ensuring strong support for each group.

Our season has kicked off with three training sessions, covering team building, tips on being an effective mentor, and the technical details of this year’s game, Mix and Match. We also discussed modifications to the HeroBot design to adapt it for this year’s challenges.

WeRobot is excited to serve the community in the new season!
